Return to Your Rest

My most recent song release, “Oh My Soul”, was written during a painful season. Many “issues of life” were coming to the surface and to be brutally honest, it was the first time in my adult life I had embraced the trauma of past experiences head on. Though the days felt dark and heavy, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that My Heavenly Father, through the power of His Holy Spirit, was working miracles in my heart. One day specifically felt especially unbearable. I remember opening my Bible to Psalm 116:7 and reading these words:

Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.
— Psalm 116:7 NIV

These words seared my soul and immediately brought me to a place of worship and remembrance. It is easy to get stuck in our pain. It is difficult to see past pain when it’s staring you right in the face. Pain feels like an unbearable weight and immoveable mountain. Yet, even in pain, we can return to a place of rest as we command our soul to remember the truth; that the Lord has been good to you. As this truth settled in my spirit, I began to sing a simple melody and lyrics, “oh my soul, bless the Lord”. Through tears I poured out of my broken worship. Through sobs I manages to utter the phrase and sing the tune of this phrase over and over. For weeks on end I read Psalms, worshipped, cried and healed.

I truly believe that there is miraculous power in authentic worship; worship that flows from a broken and contrite spirit. It blesses the heart of God when we come as we are. As you read this blog and listen to “Oh My Soul”, my prayer for you is that, above all, your soul will be at rest, and your entire being would be captured by the love and goodness of God.
